More Than 142,000 Eviction Filings Put Metro Atlanta Housing Crisis in Spotlight

0

ATLANTA, GA — New housing data is putting increased attention on the financial pressure facing renters throughout metro Atlanta.

More than 142,000 eviction cases were filed across five major metro Atlanta counties during a recent 12-month period, according to data from Princeton University’s Eviction Lab reported by WABE.

Researchers examined renter households in Cobb, Clayton, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties.

The data showed 142,047 eviction filings between June 2025 and June 2026. More than 10,000 filings were recorded in the most recent month included in the data.

The five-county area had an eviction filing rate of approximately 24%, meaning filings were equivalent to roughly one for every four renter households. A filing does not necessarily mean a tenant was ultimately removed from a home, but researchers say the process itself can create serious financial and housing consequences.

Affordability remains a major factor. Renters included in the research were paying an average of approximately $1,795 per month.

The data also revealed racial disparities. Black residents accounted for 53% of renters studied but 69% of eviction filings.

Researchers and housing advocates point to rising living expenses and the limited supply of affordable housing as important factors behind metro Atlanta’s continuing eviction problem.
