ATLANTA, GA — Residents across metro Atlanta and much of North Georgia are being urged to take precautions Friday as another round of dangerous summer heat moves across the region.
A Heat Advisory is in effect Friday, August 14, from noon until 8 p.m. for nearly all of Georgia, with the exception of counties in the northeast Georgia mountains. Heat index values — or what the temperature actually feels like when humidity is factored in — could climb as high as 109 degrees in some areas.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity could create potentially dangerous conditions, especially for people spending extended periods of time outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, reduce strenuous outdoor activities and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing during the hottest parts of the day. People should also remember to check on relatives, neighbors and pets as temperatures rise.
The extreme heat is already impacting activities in the Atlanta area. Clayton County Schools canceled all outdoor school-sanctioned activities for Friday because of the dangerous conditions.
Anyone who must work or spend time outside should take frequent breaks and seek shade or air conditioning whenever possible. Outdoor activities may also be safer when scheduled during cooler portions of the morning or evening.
With the Heat Advisory continuing through 8 p.m. Friday, North Georgia residents should remain aware of changing weather conditions and take the heat seriously throughout the afternoon.
