As Atlanta prepares to host eight matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, city leaders are finalizing a comprehensive public safety and transportation strategy designed to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors while keeping residents and fans safe. Mayor Andre Dickens, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum, Atlanta Fire Rescue Chief Rod Smith, and transportation officials held a briefing outlining plans for crowd management, emergency response operations, traffic control, and security coordination throughout the month-long tournament.
The announcement comes amid heightened attention on public safety across the city, particularly following several recent incidents on the MARTA transit system. Officials emphasized that Atlanta has spent years preparing for the event, with local, state, and federal agencies working together on security operations. Plans include increased law enforcement presence, expanded MARTA security patrols, enhanced emergency response capabilities, cybersecurity protections, drone monitoring, and coordinated efforts to address large-scale demonstrations or other potential disruptions. Federal authorities, including the FBI, have also deployed extensive security resources to protect stadiums, fan zones, transit hubs, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Atlanta expects between 300,000 and 500,000 visitors during the tournament and has completed major infrastructure improvements, including roadway upgrades, new lighting, sidewalk enhancements, and fan engagement zones throughout downtown. The FIFA Fan Festival at Centennial Olympic Park, watch parties, and community events across metro Atlanta are expected to attract large crowds. City leaders say the goal is not only to host a safe and successful World Cup but also to showcase Atlanta on the world stage as a premier destination for sports, culture, and international events.
