A Georgia State Patrol trooper was shot near Moreland Ave and Constitution Road in Atlanta Wednesday morning.

Officials confirmed the shooting to Channel 2 investigative reporter Mark Winne.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Michael Register said several agencies were doing a raid near a proposed Atlanta Police Department training facility when someone started shooting at them. The trooper was shot and officers returned fire in self-defense, according to the GBI.

The person who shot the trooper was shot and killed by law enforcement officers. The shooter’s identity has not been released.

Officials say the trooper is stable and is in surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital. GSP did not provide details about his injuries or identify him.

“We would just like to ask for everyone’s thoughts and prayers for his family during this difficult time,” GSP Colonel Chris Wright said. A Channel 2 Action News photographer at the scene saw officers with their guns drawn and trained at the woods. According to the GBI, no one else has been arrested.

Winne learned that this incident was related to ongoing protests of the proposed training facility, which protesters have nicknamed “Cop City.” The facility has been controversial to many.

Protestors say the facility would be bad for the community and for the environment. The proposed facility would take up an 85-acre plot of land off of Key Road in the largest urban forest in metro Atlanta.

Last month, protestors had to be forcibly removed from trees in the area of the proposed facility.
