The DeKalb County School District is shutting down one of its elementary schools due to a recent surge in COVID-19 cases.

The district says it is closing Oak View Elementary School on Friday after 18 students tested positive for COVID-19, which has impacted 90 other students and 13 staff members who are now in quarantine.

The district says students and staff impacted include pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 5th grades. No cases have been reported in 3rd or 4th grades.

The school will tentatively reopen on Monday, Sept. 13. Students will take part in virtual instruction during the closure.

“The reason we decided to close to the school is because the number of impacted staff members and our confidence in the school’s ability to maintain the high quality and effective operations of the school,” said DeKalb County Schools Superintendent Cheryl Watson-Harris.

She said they are confident they’ve isolated the situation and no other schools in the district are in the same situation.

“We want to make sure that we’re not putting any undue burden on the school staff to operate the school effectively over the next few days,” she said.

District leaders said multiple factors are considered when determining the status of a school.

The school district and health department are inviting students, their families and school district staff to get tested or vaccinated Friday, September 3 at the district headquarters from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Find more information posted on the district’s website.
