Through their first seven home games of the season, only family and friends were allowed inside State Farm Arena to watch Hawks games.
That changes Tuesday as a limited number of fans can watch the Hawks take on the Los Angeles Clippers in person.
Channel 2 sports director Zach Klein learned more about the COVID-19 health and safety protocols the team has put in place. The Hawks are calling their plan the “Safety Six.” These are some of the measures that fans must follow at State Farm Arena:
- One must social distance and only 8% of tickets are available so fans will spread out.
- Everyone in attendance must wear a face covering at all times with exceptions for eating and drinking.
- Touchless hand sanitizer stations will be placed throughout the arena.
The 8% capacity will allow for roughly up to 1,300 fans, who will be spread out across the lower bowl.
Brett Stephenson, who is the executive vice president and general manager of State Farm Arena, told Klein that officials are doing everything possible to ensure an enjoyable, yet safe environment.
“It’s almost 1 million square feet of space in the building. Our normal capacity is right around 17,000. So it’s still really small when you’re in there with that amount of people. But again we want to do it in a safe way,” he said. “As we feel more comfortable, we’ll continue to grow that.”
Arena officials have thought of everything, even limiting some favorite concession items from being sold like popcorn.
