IT APPEARS THAT THE DAYTIME TALK SHOW HOST ADMITS THAT SHE MAY WANT TO END HER SHOW
In a new interview with The New York Times, Ellen Degeneres has admitted that she may want to end her talk show after sixteen years and 57 Emmys. When Ellen was approached with her current contract, the one she signed in 2016, she was “close to declining” and now, nearing the 2020 expiry date of her contract, she’s feeling antsy for something new.
After years spent in a very personal sort of spotlight, Ellen is a little bit tired of always playing the nice, vanilla host. She’s also tired of dancing: “there’s been times someone wants a picture, and while I’m doing a selfie, they’re like: ‘You’re not dancing! Of course I’m not dancing. I’m walking down the street.”
Ellen also has a comedy special coming out on Netflix (December 18th) that has a sly, tongue-in-cheek title: Relatable. Apparently, it’s a bit of a departure for Ellen, who tells personal, complicated jokes that end in curse words. As Tig Notaro put it to The Times: “Ellen’s a real person with a foul mouth.”
Although there are no guarantees that Ellen will follow in Oprah’s footsteps and become an arms-length emperor, Ellen is now 60 years old and her wife, Portia Di Rossi, says that she has “other things she could tackle.”
