Oscar accountant, Brian Cullinan handed Warren Beatty the wrong envelope on Sunday night at the Oscars, which led to the wrong film being announced as best picture. The PricewaterhouseCooper accountants, Cullinan and his colleague, Martha Ruiz are both being banned for the unexplainable mistake. Ruiz was supposed to be responsible for stopping the proceedings when the wrong winner was announced, but she failed to step in. It took two minutes and 30 seconds before the mistake was corrected because of a delayed response by the two accountants. The failed to follow their own protocol quickly, according to PwC’s.
“I was in the wings stage left with Jimmy [Kimmel] when they announced La La Land,” Cullinan explained.
“When La La Land was announced, she (Ruiz) did not try to get my attention, she did not say anything. And she’s supposed to have memorized the winners.”
The two accountants involved won’t be coming back to work the Academy Awards, says film academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs. She blamed one of them for being distracted by tweeting during the show.
