MARTA to get a makeover, wants riders’ opinions on how it should look

MARTA is planning to update the exterior design of its new rail cars. The new rail cars will already have new technology and advanced safety and security features for riders. MARTA is looking to shine up its exterior to match the updates made on its interior.

Riders both current and future are being asked by MARTA to help them choose the exterior design of the new rail cars. There are currently eight different designs being offered as choices.

This is the second time that MARTA has reached out to its riders to help with rail car designs. The design of the rail cars’ interiors was chosen after combing through 17,000 votes and more than 700 comments from riders. The most popular choices were digital maps, destination displays and accessible seating and signage.

“As a result of this feedback, passenger seats will be more accommodating, railcars will offer more options for those who are standing, there will be specially marked areas for bikes and strollers, and dedicated spaces for wheelchairs will optimize entry and exit points,” said MARTA General Manager and CEO Jeffrey Parker.

MARTA is hoping for similar input from riders about the exterior design.

“We were thrilled with the response we received on the interior features and are eager to see what riders think of the exterior design options,” said Parker.

MARTA says these train upgrades are part of the larger picture for the system and complement audio-visual information system upgrades, systemwide elevator and escalator upgrades, restroom modernization, and a rehabilitation and restoration program to refresh MARTA rail stations.

Riders interested in voting on the new design can register at www.itsmarta.com/yourride to provide your feedback. MARTA will also have teams in rail stations conducting in-person surveys.

The first new rail car is expected to arrive in 2023.
