States across the country, including Georgia, are preparing to receive the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines to be distributed in the U.S.

The first wave of nearly 3 million doses developed by Pfizer will go out to all 50 states over the next three days.

Health care workers and long-term nursing home residents and staff are among the first to receive the vaccinations.

Pfizer/BioNTech is the first vaccine to be greenlighted by the Food and Drug Administration. The director of the Atlanta-based CDC Dr. Robert Redfield also approved the vaccinations late Saturday night.

That approval cleared the way for people 16 and older to get the COVID-19 vaccine shot in their arms.

How will the vaccines be distributed? Channel 2 Action News watched Sunday as the first trucks with Pfizer’s vaccine rolled out from its Michigan plant.

The company is shipping doses in temperature controlled boxes packed with dry ice. Sandy Springs-based UPS and FedEx will help deliver the vaccines.

Operation Warp Speed officials said the vaccines will go to 145 distribution centers around the country by Monday. An additional 425 sites will get shipments Tuesday, and the remaining 66 on Wednesday.
