Spelman receives a hefty donation of 2 million dollars from philanthropist Jon Stryker. This contribution will go towards a new study, known as Queer Studies. Spelman is the first HBCU in the country to start a department to help students further their education on their understanding and inclusivity on LGBTQ rights. Spelman President Mary Schmidt Campbell shares her thoughts on the Spelman’s Women’s Center. This center “has been and continues to be a pioneering leader in advancing scholarship in the area of Queer Studies. Jon Stryker’s generous contribution to further his commitment to LGBTQ inclusion and education will allow Spelman students to deepen their understanding around the study of sexuality and gender” Black Communities, Black Universities, black Pioneers.
