Guru was born in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. He attended several schools K-12 throughout Massachusetts before landing at the illustrious Morehouse College. Elam graduated with a degree in business administration from Morehouse College in Atlanta.
Elam started his music vocation under the moniker Keithy E yet later changed his name to Guru. He established Gang Starr in 1987.
