Spike Lee said: “the ref made a bad call” when Green Book won Best Picture prize at Sunday’s Oscars Academy Award show.

The director tried to storm out of the theatre after the winner was announced at the end of the Oscars ceremony, according to various media accounts, then returned to his seat and turned his back on the stage during the remainder of the acceptance speech.

In the press room backstage, Lee mentioned the fact that his film “Do the Right Thing” had failed to earn a best picture nomination for the Oscars in 1989, the year that Driving Miss Daisy won the award. Lee says, “I’m snakebit. Every time someone is driving somebody, I lose,”  in direct response to a question about his unorthodox reaction to for Green Book’s win. The director said when he heard Green Book being announced as the year’s best picture winner: “I thought I was courtside at the Garden, and the ref made a bad call.”
