MOREHOUSE NEEDS BETTER SECURITY!
Two Morehouse College students were robbed at gunpoint on campus Sunday by people they invited into a residence hall, college police said Monday afternoon, correcting their original statement that the incident occurred off campus.
The students were not injured, and the alleged robbers got away, according to Morehouse police. Authorities did not say what was stolen.
Morehouse police on Monday morning initially said the students were approached by three men, one of them armed, near Frank Street about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. A Morehouse police dispatcher on Monday told AJC.com that Atlanta police were handling the incident report.
But after further investigation, the school sent out a new statement saying the students were robbed on campus, where Atlanta police have no jurisdiction.
The robbery happened just hours after the combined homecoming festivities for Morehouse and Spelman College wrapped.
The victims said one of the men wore a red windbreaker and dark jeans and was about 5 feet 8, Morehouse police said. A second was heavy set, about 6 feet to 6-2, and had a bleached high-top fade hairstyle. The third wore all black and a fitted cap, according to police.
Atlanta police recently announced plans to work with Morehouse, Spelman and Clark Atlanta University to increase security near the Atlanta University Center.
Atlanta police Chief Erika Shields announced in a news conference last week the reinstatement of a campus security task force, composed of representatives from the area schools, and pledged to increased surveillance in the area. Atlanta police had already ramped up patrols in the area of the AUC after a rash of violent crimes involving students.
There have been a half-dozen crimes near the AUC in recent weeks, including a shooting that left 19-year-old Clark Atlanta freshman Daeja Craddick paralyzed. Two Morehouse students were robbed of their cars, and another was shot multiple times last Sunday at a local gas station while trying to protect his. That student, who was identified by family as 30-year-old Geoffrey Willis, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
