On Monday, August 13, San Luis Police pulled over Ivan Lopez. Lopez, who is a resident of Yuma Arizona, was pulled out of his vehicle after drug dogs reacted to his transportation. Upon a search, police found 168 kilograms of narcotics in two toolboxes. According to the report, Lopez had 118 kilograms of methamphetamine, six grams of cocaine, three kilograms of fentanyl, 13 kilograms of white heroin, and six kilograms of brown heroin inside the toolboxes. Authorities claim that the fentanyl alone could provide three million doses. Once it was discovered that Lopez was seen removing the boxes from inside an old KFC, authorities went to investigate. After another search of the building, which Lopez owns, authorities found a small entrance to a tunnel. The entrance was only eight inches in diameter, but it declined down 22 feet and extended 590 feet underneath the old KFC to the nearby Mexican border. Authorities believe the drugs were lifted up by rope, and the tunnel ended at a house in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico. A trap door underneath a bed at the Mexican residence was the starting point for the drug route.
