WTF, Newsweek? Details inside!

Newsweek tweeted and immediately deleted an insensitive photo of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. which caused outrage. The photo was of the civil rights leader in an open casket with a link to notable anniversaries coming in 2018. Newsweek captioned the post, “Has anyone seen my old friend Martin?” Among the scores of Twitter users appalled by the tweet was Dr. King’s daughter Bernice who tweeted, “Why, @Newsweek? Wow.”

Newsweek has since deleted the post and issued an apology to the King family, “Earlier this afternoon we published an opinion piece with an insensitive image of Martin Luther King Jr. We sincerely apologize to the King family for this egregious error.”

Bernice King went live on social media to further discuss the incident, stating “We must never forget that Dr. King was a husband and was a father so we deal all the time just with continuing to manage our father and the great work that he’s done…so it was difficult.” She went on to commend Newsweek on their swift response to the tweet and issuing a prompt apology. “I want to thank Newsweek for immediately responding and removing the image and for giving an apology. Apology accepted,”
