A Newton County man is in jail after police say he tried taking the law into his own hands.

Investigators said 47-year-old Marcus Pitts is charged with aggravated assault after he shot a man who was running from police in Covington, Ga. around 9 a.m.

A man was shot Saturday morning in Covington after he crashed his SUV into another vehicle while fleeing from police.

“A citizen driving a truck followed the suspect from the SUV and blocked him with his vehicle,” a police spokesperson said. “The citizen driving the truck fired a handgun at the suspect and struck him in the neck.”

Lennox was rushed to the hospital after the shooting. At that time, authorities said he was in critical condition.
