HOW SERIOUS ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF BIRTH CONTROL?

According to a study published by the Journal of American Medical Association, there is an increased risk of developing depression for women taking the contraceptive pill.    The study confirmed a link between hormonal contraceptives and depression.  The study is the largest of its kind, with one million women between the ages of 15 and 34 tracked for a total of 13 years.

Researchers found that women on the pill were approximately 34% more likely to develop depression than women who were not.  Teens, however, are at the greatest risk of depression, with an 80% increase.  In addition, other hormonal-based contraceptives such as the IUS/Coil, the patch and the ring – were shown to cause an even higher rate of depression than the pill.

In recent years we’ve seen increased efforts from the NHS and family planning organizations encouraging teens to use the pill.  The new research suggests this practice is misguided to say the least.
